About Gísli Svendsen
My interest in photography started around 1980 and I got my first real camera, which was Ricoh KR10, 35mm, in 1982. I learned the basics in photographing from a photographer who had a studio in Isafjordur, my hometown, at that time.
In the beginnig I shot mainly landscape picture of the beautiful and harsh nature where I lived. I also took picture of people I met on my daily basis, but nothing professional.
I studied law at the University of Iceland after graduating from High school in Reykjavík. After three years studying law I started at The School of Photography in Reykjavík in the Autumn 2011 (http://www.ljosmyndaskolinn.is); and graduated in the beginning of the year 2014, as a professional Photographer.
My main focus is in documentaries, and my interest lies in that area. Regarding my interest in documentary, I went to a special Workshop in Israel “The Other Side of the Conflict”, held by the group Punctum, (http://www.punc-tum.com/workshop_israel.html), November 2013, under guidance of the documentary photographer, Jan Grarup (http://jangrarup.photoshelter.com). After that I went to a wokshop in Asia, mars 2014, with emphasis on people’s live in Cambodia and Vietnam, under guidance from Thorkell Thorkellson, documentary phoptographer (http://www.thorkell.com). And I also went to workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, November 2014, under guidance from “Workshopx” http://www.workshopx.org/. where I started a new project (body of Work) regarding “Ladyboys” in Asia. I'm a member of NPPA, and I have done some work on journalist basis. In Mars 2015 I went to documentary people’s life in Bali and Lombokk, Indonesia. My plans for the year 2016 is to keep on doing my projects in Asia.
